About
FRACTURE

A SAPAN original production, FRACTURE explores the themes of war and conflict. Through dance, music and theater, SAPAN depicts the emotions felt by two warring nations that in the end saw that their conflict was futile, yielding the overarching question: when you look deeper than the surface: are two conflicting parties more similar than they are different?

How did FRACTURE come to be?

A SAPAN Original Production, FRACTURE investigates how opposing sides of a conflict are more similar than they are different. Drawing on South Asian and Western dance, music, and theater traditions, and influenced by current and historical events, FRACTURE seeks to explore the emotional and physical toll of conflict through performance art.

The Show

Fractured

After years of prolonged tension, neighboring countries Ashiana and Pangera find themselves on the brink of total war. All it takes is two charismatic leaders to push their citizens across the border

A Soldier is Born

Enlisted civilians from across Ashiana undergo rigorous military training, transforming themselves into hardy soldiers ready for battle.

A Tale of Two Camps

On both sides of the border, recruits adapt to their new lives as soldiers. They learn to operate as a unit and bond as they face an uncertain future.

Fate Undecided

Soldiers reminisce about their loved ones and come to terms with the possibility of never returning home.

A New Family

Soldiers may be far from home, but through teamwork and camaraderie, they learn to protect one another as brothers and sisters in arms.

Call to Arms

The inspirational words of Ashiana and Pangera’s leaders echo in the troops’ minds as they resign themselves to either kill or be killed.  The soldiers know their sacrifice will be honored no matter the outcome.

Obliterate

The warriors confront their enemy on the battlefield, unleashing their destructive wrath. Can anyone survive this annihilation?

Reflection

The dust settles on the smoldering battlefield. Staring into the eyes of a vulnerable enemy, the shell-shocked soldiers see fragments of their own reflection - do their eyes deceive them?

The Cost of Freedom

A courageous soldier struggles to accept a medal of honor in light of the lives he has stolen. Although he will return home, he is forever changed.

A Hero’s Welcome

After months of uncertainty, families and loved ones breathe a sigh of relief upon the safe return of their victorious veterans. These heroes are reunited with their loved ones amidst patriotic celebrations.

Memories

In Your Head

Returned soldiers feel disassociated from their home lives, unable to distinguish between past trauma and present dangers. The citizens of Ashiana and Pangera will carry these battle scars for the rest of their lives.

Kin, Friends, Citizens

Is long-lasting peace for Ashiana and Pangera a possibility? Or are they fated to fight the “enemy” for generations?
