On February 21, 2010, Drishtipat DC is putting together an evening of global music and dance performances to commemorate UN International Mother Language Day. This is a holiday that grew out of the Bengali language movement of the 1950s and 60s that eventually led to Bangladeshi independence; at the same time, it is a UN-recognized day of respect and celebration of all native languages and cultures.
Drishtipat is a non-partisan, non-profit network that seeks to address human rights and social justice issues that impact the Bangladeshi and Bangladeshi-American community in the US. The DC chapter, with all volunteers, works on issues like ensuring immigrants' and women's rights, informing the policy-making process, and raising awareness about Bangladeshi culture and history more generally
