After a series of instrumental failures with the flute and piano as a child, Nikhil Lakhanpal started learning to play the dhol when he first visited Punjab as a teenager. Throughout high school in the Atlanta area and in college, Nikhil continued to play his dhol at weddings, student events, random parties, and for the Georgetown University Bhangra team, Jawani. Nikhil completed both his B.S. and M.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University, spending two years at its campus in Qatar, where he temporarily made a makeshift dhol for the campus' Bollywood dance team. After graduating from Georgetown, Nikhil spent a three-year tour of duty with the Department of State at the US Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He has recently returned to Washington from Riyadh and looks forward to playing dhol on a more regular basis back home in America! Nikhil's other interests are golfing, Atlanta sports, foreign affairs, writing, and playing with his beagle, Calvin.
